Floods can cause sanitary sewer lines to back up into houses and businesses through drain pipes. Backups can cause health hazards and repairs can be expensive.
Most homeowners policies do not cover damage from sewer backups. Water backup coverage may need to be added to a homeowners’ policy to cover the risk of sewage or drain overflows or backups.
Coverage should include the risk of damage to items such as flooring, furniture, and personal belongings.
Coverage typically does not include the repair or replacement of a sump pump or damage due to a sump pump that has not been maintained. Damages due to issues such as flood or an overflowing body of water also might not be covered.
