Retaining walls that are not part of a building

A retaining wall detached from a building might be covered under homeowners insurance if damaged due to a covered loss, such as fire or wind. Insurance policies often cover 10 percent of structural damage. But coverage may not be provided if it was not due to a covered loss. For instance, a retaining wall damaged by earth settling or water damage, or due to negligence or poor maintenance will not be covered.
